Brazil opens South American campaign on home court in Rio, but the real story is Argentina and Colombia rewriting the map of power
Đáp: Có, nếu Colombia duy trì phong độ và tích lũy điểm FIVB trước World Cup 2027.
People look at the FIVB rankings; I see a rebellion. As the South American Women's Volleyball Championship begins in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil enters with the status of the region's No.1 team: rich history, more titles than all remaining teams combined, and a home court in the heart of Brazil's most volleyball-loving city. Any ranking system would place them above the rest, but I am not writing this article to praise the numbers.
The South American Championship is not merely a continental competition. It is the first piece in the qualification system leading to Los Angeles 2028. FIVB has placed the 2027 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Cup at the center of the Olympic journey, and every previous continental event is a place to accumulate points, test rosters, build locker-room trust and sharpen tactical credibility. A team cannot show up at the 2027 World Cup as a stranger. They must start building right now.
Brazil are hosting, but hosting does not automatically bring a title. Based on my experience following regional matches, Brazil are in their most intriguing phase: they are no longer a group built around a single golden generation, but are forced to mix veterans with a new layer of young athletes hungry for trophies. Home court in Rio will bring comfort from fans, hotels and travel, but what they need most is a serious test of roster depth before entering the 2027 World Cup cycle. Do not trust a man who is always right – I am only ever wrong in interesting ways, and if I am wrong here, it will be because I treated Brazil as a perfect machine instead of a team still looking for itself.
Look at Argentina. They do not have Brazil's trophy cabinet, but they have faced Brazil in many finals and always know how to make life uncomfortable for their rival. Argentina may not have superior height at every position, but they compensate with a disciplined defensive system, varied setting and a generation used to competing at big tournaments since youth level. When Brazil try to speed up the attack, Argentina can deliberately slow the tempo, play long rallies and wait for errors from Brazil's blocking line.
Chaos is a designer, and Colombia are the blueprint few people read carefully. Colombia are no longer a weak Andean team. They have invested in youth, sent players to compete in Brazil and Europe, and built a style based on vertical jump and aggressive serving. At the South American Championship, Colombia do not need to win immediately in order to win. They only need to beat Argentina for second place, or push Brazil to a tight five-set semifinal. Once that happens, their FIVB points will rise sharply and the door to Los Angeles 2028 is no longer a distant dream.
What makes this tournament important is not who lifts the trophy. It is which team uses the event to experiment without losing the result. If Brazil are too safe, they will win in an unimpressive way, but enter the 2027 World Cup with fewer answers for difficult situations. By contrast, if Colombia and Argentina accept risk, they may lose to Brazil in the final but still leave Rio with a tested core. If you are afraid of chaos, you will never understand sport. Brazil may keep the South American throne, but the real measure for the road to Los Angeles 2028 is whether each team dares to challenge its own assumptions.
Where could I be wrong? I could be wrong if I underestimate Brazil's mental strength when they play at home. Their legend comes not only from technique, but from nights when Rio's crowd becomes a wall of sound. Brazil may not need to experiment or take risks; that alone may be enough to win. But their goal should not stop at the South American title. If Brazil use only an old lineup to handle matches, they will enter the 2027 World Cup with a predictable approach, and predictability is the most dangerous thing in high-level sport.
The biggest question of this tournament is not whether Brazil will win. The biggest question is: will Argentina dare to play with their own identity when facing Brazil away, and will Colombia turn confidence into concrete results? I bet Brazil will still reach the final, but I do not bet they will win easily. I bet Argentina will push Brazil into a long match, and Colombia will make at least one big team swallow a bitter exit. That is not prophecy. That is how I read the blueprint of chaos in South America, where empty arenas are no longer a fear, but a place where impostors are exposed and those who dare to innovate shine under the lights.
If you want to understand Los Angeles 2028, do not start with the rankings. Start in Rio de Janeiro this year. Brazil will bring the glamour of a power re-establishing order, Argentina will bring the organized discomfort of a challenger, and Colombia will bring what South American sport needs most: a shock big enough to change how the whole continent looks at the future. People look at the rankings; I see a rebellion. I do not predict results to please the crowd; I bet against prejudice, and the biggest prejudice right now is thinking Brazil need another South American title to prove themselves.
