When the analysis output has no data: what must a sports writer do?

I have just received a document titled Stage-2 Deep Analysis Notice: Insufficient Input Data. All ten analysis sections are empty. There is no title, no information point, no viewpoint, no team or player name, no timestamp. The only things that exist are warnings: missing data, cannot analyze, do not fabricate. In a sports newsroom, that document can be thrown in the trash. But I want to keep it. It reminds me of a principle after more than ten years writing about basketball and football: empty data is not blank paper to decorate; it is a stop sign. Many readers think a data journalist is someone who always has a number. In reality, the hardest part is not finding numbers but knowing which number is lying and which number is missing. A football prediction model can have xG, PPDA, pass counts, and possession rate, but if it lacks data about opponents or physical condition, that model is only a picture drawn on sand. The same is true in basketball. A beautiful layup at the end of a game is often called courage by the media. But whether that courage is real, I need to look at twenty earlier situations: how much energy did the team have, how did they defend, and from which system did the play come. Without video and data, every explanation is only emotion. I once used an accumulated xG model to predict the 2026 World Cup, and I was wrong. Germany had high possession numbers, but I did not see data about their opponents’ defensive pressure. That year, Germany were eliminated in the group stage. Since then, I no longer use the phrase decisive metric. Numbers are only one part; they must be considered with context. When context disappears, numbers become the most dangerous thing in journalism: they make readers believe something that has never been verified. The document in front of me is not an analysis of a match. It is a refusal to analyze. So what can I write from it? I can write that I should not write anything. If I try to jump over the N/A wall to create a 1,503-word sports article, I am not doing journalism; I am writing fiction. A proper article needs three layers: facts, data, and context. All three are absent from this source. I do not see this emptiness as failure. Instead, I see it as a clean signal. In an age where algorithms can produce hundreds of articles every hour, a system that dares to say it does not have enough data is trustworthy. The problem is not the letters N/A. The problem is editors who are ready to fill the blank with emotion, rumors, and flowery phrases. Sports journalism in Vietnam is under enormous speed pressure. By the time a match ends, news sites already need a story. But speed does not cancel honesty. An empty document must be handled by going back to the source: was the original text ingested? Which data was omitted? Does the input need to be replaced? Never write from a gap on purpose. I often tell colleagues: numbers show a trend, but they are not a prophecy. This is even more true when numbers do not exist. An article with no trend, no context, and no evidence cannot have a conclusion. To create the article, the whole process must be redone: get the correct source text, rerun the data extraction step, and clearly state the publication date and citation source. That is the only way to prevent analysis from becoming magic. Numbers never need our protection. On the contrary, we need them so we do not fool ourselves. When numbers are absent, a writer is even more likely to self-deceive. So this article is not about football or basketball; it is about the boundary of data journalism. That boundary lies right in front of the N/A boxes. And the question I want to leave readers with is simple: between a complete but empty article and an honest line of refusal, which one do you choose?
